Conditional verdict

Choose the 192 TB configuration when its usable capacity under the intended RAID, filesystem overhead, growth reserve and restore workspace clears the requirement. Choose the 480 TB configuration when the dataset or retention plan genuinely needs the larger array and the operating process can handle more drives, longer recovery work and a larger failure domain.

The larger server also lists 32 cores, 64 threads and 128 GB of ECC memory, compared with 12 cores, 24 threads and 64 GB of ECC memory on the smaller system. Those resources matter for checksums, compression, encryption and application work, but no measured throughput is published.

Start with usable capacity, not the headline

Raw capacity is the sum of the HDD labels. RAID parity or mirrors, filesystem metadata, reserves, snapshots and hot spares reduce what applications can use. Model the exact layout before ordering and leave room for rebuilds, scrubs and temporary copies.

The Silver system uses 12 × 16 TB HDDs and two 480 GB NVMe boot devices. The Gold system uses 24 × 20 TB HDDs and two 960 GB NVMe boot devices. The boot pair is separate from the HDD headline and should not be added to the data-array capacity.

Plan recovery around drive count and the 1 Gbps port

More drives provide capacity and layout choices, but also increase the number of components to monitor and replace. Define alerting, spare policy, scrub schedule, rebuild procedure and a tested restore path. Local RAID cannot protect against deletion, compromise or loss of the whole chassis.

Both servers list a 1 Gbps unmetered port. That may be the limiting resource for remote backup or bulk restore even when the array can move data faster locally. Tungsto does not publish end-to-end throughput here, so test the actual destination and protocol.

Is 192 TB or 480 TB available to the filesystem?

No. Those are raw decimal capacities. RAID or mirrors, filesystem overhead, snapshots, spares and reserved recovery space reduce usable capacity.

Does unmetered 1 Gbps make either server suitable for every backup workload?

No. Unmetered describes billing, while the 1 Gbps port is a ceiling. Backup windows also depend on change rate, protocol, compression, routing and the remote endpoint.
