HDD capacity with separate operating-system devices

The configuration pairs a Xeon Silver 4310 with 12 cores and 24 threads, 64 GB ECC memory, twelve 16 TB HDDs and two 480 GB NVMe devices. Its included port is 1 Gbps unmetered. The headline 192 TB describes only the combined raw HDD capacity; the separate NVMe devices have their own role in the installation.

Consider this machine for capacity-first workloads suited to HDD storage. Evaluate memory, random I/O, access concurrency and restore time before deciding that capacity alone meets the requirement.

Describe the repository before sizing the pool

For backups, record the protected data size, change rate, retention period and expected number of simultaneous jobs. For archives, record retrieval frequency and the largest recovery request you must accommodate. For media or file distribution, consider whether reads are mostly sequential and how many clients are active at once.

Leave room for growth and operational work instead of planning to fill the nominal capacity. Do not count on a compression or deduplication ratio without representative data. If the machine must also transform, index or serve the dataset, include those applications in the CPU and memory budget.

Make the redundancy assumption visible

As a simple conventional RAID 6 calculation, all twelve HDDs in one group with no spare would provide 160 TB of nominal data capacity before filesystem overhead. This is an arithmetic illustration, not an installation recommendation. Splitting drives into multiple groups, selecting mirrors or reserving spares changes both capacity and failure behavior.

TB and TiB are also different units: manufacturers use decimal TB, while software may display binary TiB. A lower numerical display is not automatically missing disk space. For a TrueNAS installation, use the actual vdev design, overhead and operating reserve when estimating space available to datasets.

Confirm the system and device presentation

Separate NVMe devices allow you to plan operating-system storage without automatically consuming the HDD data layout. Their presence does not mean a boot mirror, cache or special storage device has been configured. Agree the intended role before installation and avoid assuming that adding cache solves a memory or workload mismatch.

TrueNAS and Linux are available system choices. Confirm the release, controller mode, individual disk visibility and driver compatibility for the design. Hardware RAID is a quoted option; it should be chosen to fit the storage software, not added by default. Define how you will monitor device health and how replacement requests are handled.

Check whether the restore window fits the network

The included 1 Gbps unmetered port describes a speed tier without a transfer-volume charge. It does not promise a particular read, write or end-to-end restore rate. Large recovery jobs can be constrained by the remote endpoint, disks, encryption or network path; test the complete restoration workflow with representative data.

If the required window exceeds that design, discuss the quote-based 10 Gbps option and verify availability for the region. Keep another recovery copy outside this machine. RAID, separate NVMe boot devices and a second directory on the same host do not protect against every event that can remove access to the server.

Choose the term and know when to move up

Compare the term, region and quoted extras before funding the account. Managed backup software, a second data copy and an off-site backup subscription are not implicit in the rental. Include them in the operating-cost assessment.

Compare Xeon Gold 6338 for a larger capacity requirement, or NVMe compute offers when latency and active I/O dominate. Include first access, recovery and eventual data export whichever machine you choose.

Questions before you order

Does 192 TB mean I can store that much backed-up data?

Not directly. Redundancy, filesystem overhead, working reserves, retention growth and unit conversion affect the result. Size from the retained data and actual layout, not the headline capacity.

Are the NVMe devices already a mirrored boot pair?

The listing describes the devices, not a confirmed installation layout. Agree their role and redundancy before deployment; do not assume they are configured as a mirror or cache.

Is the 10 Gbps upgrade included?

No. This offer includes a 1 Gbps port. A 10 Gbps upgrade is quote-based and requires confirmation for the chosen machine and region.
