Conditional verdict by server size
Choose from the Ryzen range when the workload fits within 6 to 16 cores, 64 to 128 GB of memory, up to 4 TB raw NVMe and a 1 Gbps port. Choose from the EPYC range when the plan requires at least 24 cores, more memory or NVMe headroom, or the included 10 Gbps port.
This is a sizing rule, not a performance verdict. Ryzen can be the efficient rental when it clears every threshold; EPYC is justified when demand or recovery margin crosses a resource boundary.

Translate the workload into thresholds
Measure CPU, resident memory, disk use and transfer before moving beyond Ryzen. For virtualization, databases or parallel jobs, include host overhead, cache, maintenance and failover margin when sizing EPYC.
The catalogue does not publish clock rates or single-thread measurements. It therefore cannot support the common shortcut that Ryzen always wins lightly threaded work or that EPYC always wins server work. Test the exact configuration and software.

Check memory policy, layout and port demand
Ryzen entries are not marked ECC. Some EPYC offers explicitly state ECC; its DDR5 entries do not. If error correction is required, verify the exact configuration rather than the family.
Ryzen uses two NVMe devices on every current offer. EPYC uses two or four. Device count changes layout options but not backup obligations. The 10 Gbps EPYC port provides a larger included ceiling, not guaranteed throughput to every destination.

Build a two-model shortlist
Write minimum and peak requirements, remove configurations that fail them, and compare the current term prices of the two smallest survivors. Then verify region availability, operating-system compatibility, memory protection and storage design. Avoid paying for unused capacity or selecting by family reputation alone.

Is Ryzen always faster per core than EPYC?
The Tungsto catalogue contains no controlled per-core benchmark, so it cannot support that claim. Results depend on the exact processor, software, memory and workload.
Do I need EPYC for every virtualization host?
No. A Ryzen host may fit a small, replaceable guest set. EPYC becomes relevant when measured core, memory, storage or network requirements exceed the Ryzen configurations.
